Indigenous Policy at Jumbunna
The Jumbunna Research Unit has extensive knowledge and experience of Indigenous policy in Australia. Jumbunna has a predominantly Indigenous research team with expertise in policy development and analysis, program design and delivery, community consultation, and monitoring and evaluation. Jumbunna's Research Unit is renowned for its high quality research, and community and policy-focused outcomes. The expertise of members of the Research Unit spans Indigenous affairs at a federal, state, territory and local level in the areas of education, health, housing, trade, criminal justice and governance.
Professor Larissa Behrendt has been a high level advisor to governments and Indigenous organisations on many Indigenous policy issues. She currently sits on the NSW Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee, the Indigenous Advisory Committee of Environment Australia, the AIATSIS Council, the UTS Council , and the Sydney Writer's Festival. She is the Alternate Chair of the NSW Government's Serious Offenders Review Board and a member of the NSW Sentencing Council. She was a member of the ATSIC Treaty Think Tank, and has published on Indigenous rights, dispute resolution, social justice, criminal justice, treaty, Aboriginal women's issues, and public policy.
Professor Geoffrey Scott has over twenty five years experience in the public service working in Indigenous policy, and has been the Director General of the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Deputy and Acting CEO of ATSIC. In 1993 he was awarded the Public Service Medal. He has worked as a consultant to various Indigenous organisations, including the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Reconciliation Australia and AIATSIS.
Mark McMillan has a Master of Law and Policy from the University of Arizona, and has worked with ATSIC and Aboriginal community organisations on issues of governance.
Ruth McCausland has extensive Indigenous and human rights policy experience, including working as an advisor to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and on the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families. She is the author of the Anti-Discrimination Board report, Race for the Headlines: racism and media discourse.
Jason Field has broad policy experience in the Commonwealth and state governments, including work on the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Families, with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Megan Davis has extensive experience in international trade and human rights issues, including submissions to government inquiries on traditional knowledge, bills of rights and the US Free Trade Agreement.
Nicole Watson has native title policy experience from her work at the National Native Title Tribunal and the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency.
Jumbunna publishes two journals focusing on Indigenous policy issues, Balayi and the Journal of Indigenous Policy.
