Students' information on ITAS

Entitlement

Students are eligible for up to 2 hours per week per subject of tutoring at no cost to the student, and up to 5 additional hours in total during examination preparation breaks.

ITAS accessment

Students wishing to access ITAS should first fill out an ITAS Student Application form (a form needs to be completed every semester).

Students are also responsible to ensure they have completed ITAS Educational Assessment form. This is to be completed by the student and the course coordinator or lecturer or one of the Student Support officers at Jumbunna IHL.

Student's responsibilities

Students have a number of responsibilities relating to preparation for and of attendance of sessions, originality of work including word processing and notification of cancellation of a session. An ITAS—Student Responsibilities Agreement Form must be completed prior to the commencement of tutoring.

Additional tutorial sessions

The student must lodge a written ITAS Application for Additional Hours available from the ITAS coordinator. In this application students must provide student's name, student ID number, course of enrolment, the subject/s for which additional assistance is sought and reason/s why they are requesting the additional assistance.

Note: DEST ITAS Guidelines stipulate the maximum amount of additional assistance is limited to five hours in total. That is, if the student is enrolled in four subjects, the maximum additional assistance that can be approved is a total of five hours, not five hours per subject.

Tutor selection processes

When the Student Application has been approved, the ITAS coordinator at Jumbunna IHL will match the student with a suitably qualified tutor from the list of registered tutors at Jumbunna IHL.

In some cases it may be difficult to locate tutors to work with students who live outside of Metropolitan Sydney. If the ITAS coordinator cannot locate a suitable tutor from the tutor database, they will make enquiries with Faculty Representative as well as with organisations that are in the student's local area. These may include any or all of the following:

  • Primary or High School Aboriginal Education Assistants [AEAs] teachers or principals
  • Indigenous education centres [TAFE, Universities]
  • Land Councils
  • Local AECG

Students who live outside of Metropolitan Sydney are in a good position to help by making these enquiries themselves, because they are more likely to have connections with the people in their local area.

Options in selecting tutor

Students are free to nominate a tutor of their choice if they know of someone who may be suitable. However, approval of these arrangements can only occur if:

  • The prospective tutor can demonstrate they have suitable qualifications
  • The prospective tutor registers as an ITAS tutor at UTS Jumbunna IHL
  • The prospective tutor is not the student's regular [university] course tutor or lecturer or a member of the student's immediate family or [if applicable] the student's employer or supervisor at work.

If/when you have located a person who may be suitable, you should contact the ITAS Coordinators at UTS Jumbunna IHL or ask the person to contact us so that we can check their qualifications and register them if they are suitable.

Tutorial time and location

ITAS tutorials may take place at any time agreed by the student and the tutor, as long as the dates on which they take place are not outside those specified in the tutor's contract.

Tutor conflict solution

If for some reason you don't get along with your tutor, you should first try to work the problem out directly with the tutor. If you can't resolve the issue you can approach an appropriate staff member of the Student Support Unit at Jumbunna IHL and explain the problem to them. Jumbunna staff may then undertake to resolve the issue by approaching the tutor on your behalf or by arranging a meeting between a Jumbunna Support staff member, the tutor and [if appropriate] the student so that the issue/s can be discussed and resolved.
