Indigenous Student Support Officers

There are two officers who undertake one on one discussion and liaison with students in relation to coursework and assignments. These officers also have regular follow up discussions and meetings with academic teaching staff on behalf of the Indigenous students who are seeking learning support in relation to their course of study.

Our staff are dedicated to supporting individual students through any academic challenges. They can provide advice or assist, refer, advocate and liaise with faculties on your behalf. Contact them at any time during office hours by phone, email or by dropping into Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning.

Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

This service provides up to 2 hours face to face tutoring per subject that the student is enrolled in. There is no cost to the student; the program is federally funded. There is a registration process and some ongoing documentation is required between the student, tutor and the ITAS Officer.

Yana Muru Academic Skill Development Program

The Yana Muru Academic Skills Development Program helps students to be more successful in their assessments by developing reading and writing skills and, where needed, mathematics ability.

Students are tutored individually or in small groups so the program is targeted directly at what the student needs. The program does not incur the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) debt.

The program is taught by two academics who have had extensive experience with the Yana Muru program. The program is regularly evaluated and adapted to individual students needs and students frequently comment on how approachable the staff are and how important the program has been to their success.

Recruitment and Events Officers

There are a number of Recruitment and Events Officers within Jumbunna with different roles one officer's primary role is to provide information about UTS courses and pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. They also administer the Yana Muru Pathway program offered to potential students wanting to study in mainstream programs at UTS. This program provides an opportunity for students to seek a placement at UTS without the required ATAR score or for people who are mature aged.

This officer assists students to access the range of scholarships offered by Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning (JIHL) and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

The recruitment and Events Officers can also provide a referral service for programs run in block mode.

The other functions of this role include organising events of cultural significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff and coomunity within UTS.

Faculty Liaison Officer program

This program is aimed at increasing the retention and completion rates of Indigenous students studying at UTS. Staff members from JIHL regularly engage with academic staff that coordinate the programs where Indigenous students are studying. They meet at least twice a semester or on an as needs basis, to identify any areas of additional support or tutoring assistance which can be provided to students.

Study facilities

Jumbunna has two computer rooms with printing facilities for student use during business hours. Students can also apply for an after-hours pass that enables 24x7 access. See our Academic & Cultural Advisers to obtain a pass. You will need to bring your UTS student ID card.

Jumbunna also provides two rooms where students can study or receive tutorials. Please note that demand for tutorial rooms can be high. You can secure a room in advance by using the timetable/booking sheet attached to the door of Rm 1718.

A common room with kitchen facilities is also provided.

Jumbunna also provides students with fruit and basic food on daily basis and morning tea once a week on a Wednesday.
