Top tips from UTS students
We asked some current students to tell us the sort of things they would have liked to have known before they went to uni.
The collected answers include
Referencing system
It is important to acknowledge and properly document your sources to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a form of theft and occurs whenever you use somebody else's words or ideas without acknowledging the original source. (UTS Library, 2005)
Different faculties and program areas use different referencing systems and students need to know which one is the right one for them. You can lose marks on assignments if you reference incorrectly.
To find out how to reference in an essay and how to make a reference list visit the UTS BELL site, there are many examples of the APA method for each.
Use library effectively
At the beginning of each semester both the City and Kuring-Gai libraries offer an Introduction to Library Research workshop. Students can register and gain valuable knowledge about how to make their time in the library worthwhile.
Students can also contact Jemima McDonald who supports Indigenous Students from all faculties. Jemima can assist students with finding study resources and can also teach students how to use referencing programs such as Refworks.
